Populating narratives using Wikidata events: an initial experiment

The study presented in this paper is part of our research aimed at improving the search functionalities of current Digital Libraries using formal narratives. Narratives are intended as sequences of events. We present the results of an initial experiment to detect and extract implicit events from the Wikidata knowledge base in order to construct a narrative in a semi-automatic way. Wikidata contains many historical entities, but comparably few events. The reason is that most events in Wikidata are represented in an implicit way, e.g. by listing a date of birth instead of having an event of type "birth". For this reason, we decided to generate what we call the Wikidata Event Graph (WEG), i.e. the graph of implicit events found in Wikidata. We performed an initial experiment taking as case study the narrative of the life of Italian poet Dante Alighieri. Only one event of the life of Dante is explicitly represented in Wikidata as instance of the class Q1190554 Occurrence. Enabling European Archaeological Research: The ARIADNE E-infrastructure

Research e-infrastructures, digital archives and data services have become important pillars of scientific enterprise that in recent decades has become ever more collaborative, distributed and data-intensive. The archaeological research community has been an early adopter of digital tools for data acquisition, organisation, analysis and presentation of research results of individual projects. However, the provision of e-infrastructure and services for data sharing, discovery, access and re-use has lagged behind. This situation is being addressed by ARIADNE: the Advanced Research Infrastructure for Archaeological Dataset Networking in Europe. This EU-funded network has developed an e-infrastructure that enables data providers to register and provide access to their resources (datasets, collections) through the ARIADNE data portal, facilitating discovery, access and other services across the integrated resources. This article describes the current landscape of data repositories and services for archaeologists in Europe, and the issues that make interoperability between them difficult to realise. The results of the ARIADNE surveys on users' expectations and requirements are also presented. The main section of the article describes the architecture of the e-infrastructure, core services (data registration, discovery and access) and various other extant or experimental services. The on-going evaluation of the data integration and services is also discussed. The activity of design of the Joint Resource Registry is propaedeutic to the building phase of a comprehensive inventory of resources and is the result of two different activities: o A survey of resources (datasets, collections, infrastructures, services) available in the archaeological context; o The definition of the main entities for the PARTHENOS data model taking into account the ontology defined in T5.1. In this document, we present a description of the existing registries in the humanities area, derived from the analysis conducted in the first activity. The goal of the activity was to identify the main descriptive conceptual entities and features of existing resources that would be useful for the definition of the PARTHENOS Registry Data Model. This document is organized as follows: Section 2 describes the best-known standards used in the definition of registry models; Section 3 describes the survey carried out of existing registries in the thematic area of the PARTHENOS project; Section 4 contains a detailed description of the surveyed registries; Section 5 summarizes the main entities and functionalities of the analysed registries; Section 6 presents the PARTHENOS Joint Resource Registry Data Model; and finally, Section 7 presents the architecture of the Joint Resource Registry service that implements the model.Source: Project report, PARTHENOS, Deliverable D5.2, pp.1, 2017

Mapping the ARIADNE catalogue data model to CIDOC CRM: Bridging resource discovery and item-level access

ARIADNE is a European project aiming to integrate existing archaeological research infrastructures, services and distributed datasets, and to develop new technologies and tools to improve archaeological research methodology. The ARIADNE registry contains information about resources available among the various partners of the project and the metadata repository, which contains item level information of these resources. In order to provide an advanced discovery mechanism combining both item level and registry level information we propose a mapping from the ARIADNE Catalog Data Model, the model of the ARIADNE registry, to the CIDOC CRM, the underlying model of the metadata repository. Describing research data: a case study for archaeology

The growth of the digital resources produced by the research activities demand the development of e-Infrastructures in which researchers can access remote facilities, select and re-use huge volumes of data and services, run complex experimental processes and share results. Data registries aim to describe uniformly the data of e-Infrastructures contributing to the re-usability and interoperability of big scientific data. However the current situation requires the development of powerful resource integration mechanisms that step beyond the principles guaranteed by the data registries standards. This paper proposes a conceptual model for describing data resources and services and extends the existing specifications for the development of data registries. EuropeanaLabs: An Infrastructure to Support the Development of Europeana

This document describes the Europeana Development and communication infrastructure, called EuropeanaLabs, built inside the EU projects Europeana and Europeana v. 2. The EuropeanaLabs consists of a number of servers, storages and communication devices; it is used to create Virtual Machines, called sandboxes, used by Europeana foundation communities. EuropeanaLabs provides a test environment, for applications and demos, to several cultural heritage and technology projects, most of them funded by EU, in addition it features a set of servers for cooperative work. The Europeana linked open data pilot server

The Linked Data is a set of principles and technologies providing a publishing para- digm for sharing and reusing RDF data on the Web. The Linked Data Cloud is expanding at a very high speed since 2007, when the Linked Data Project was launched. Europeana, the European Digital Library, subscribes to the view of a web of data, and the distribution of cultural heritage data is one of the main objectives established by the Europeana Strategic Plan. The service will allow Europeana users to contribute to the contents of the digital library in several different ways, such as uploading simple media objects along with their descriptions, annotating existing objects, or enriching existing descriptions. The user and the system requirements are outlined first, and used to derive the basic principles underlying the service. This is a technical document detailing the ASSETS architecture and API for each component. It integrates and extends results of the first year mainly from T2.0.4 "Platform design and implementation guidelines" and T2.0.5 "API Specifications", but it introduces technical aspects of all the software services defined, analysed, implemented and tested in ASSETS WP2.1, WP2.2, WP2.3, WP2.4, WP2.5 and WP3.2. This document provides the following information regarding the Assets Services: The rationale behind the service choices; The approach and methodology of proposed solutions; The services description and the definition of their interfaces (APIs); The data models and data flows exchanged between services. This documentation is the basis for the development activities, because identifies the components, their responsibilities data models and interfaces. Through the iteration, as yet occurred during the first year, the data models and interfaces will be refined and enriched with further details. More, even if an improved User Interface is expected on next months, yet in this document ASSETS is able to present some anticipations with preliminary results and mock-ups, carried out during this year.
